Home Up

The following are suggestions for writing a letter to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to terminate your membership.

A letter should be sent to the Bishop of the Ward of your current membership records. It should be in your own words (and I cannot stress that enough) and state something like "This is to inform you that as of (give date) I have terminated my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Please send me a letter stating you have removed my membership at my request." Also state that they are not to use the term "excommunication" in the letter they send back to you or on their records. You can then list your reasons for leaving the church. This is a good opportunity to share with them your faith in God, not man.

If there are children involved you should include their name in your letter, stating that their membership is also to be terminated.

It is a good idea to send duplicate copies of your letter to your Bishop, Stake President, President of the LDS Church and the LDS Church Membership Dept. in Salt Lake. This will help to insure that someone responds to your letter. Be sure to keep a copy for your own files.

If you do not know which ward has your records, you can send your letter direct to: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Membership Records Dept., 50 E. No. Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. You should include enough information for them to identify your records: name, date and place of birth, names of mother and father, last ward (to your knowledge) to have your record.

Remember, you are not requesting a favor from them. You have the right to terminate your membership whenever you choose. You are quiting, they did not "fire" you. You do not have to attend their court or meet with them unless you so desire. If you want to meet with them to explain your reasons for leaving, I suggest you invite them to your home or some neutral location rather than their office. This way you retain control of the meeting, rather than them. Also, you do not want to give the impression you accept their priesthood authority to call you into a meeting.

Below you will find two versions as suggestions of how you can word your request.

Version I, "Total" is designed for those persons who are sensitive, and who have suffered great emotional trauma coming out of Mormonism. It is designed to reduce the harassment from Mormon leaders.

Version II, "Court" (Disciplinary Council) is designed for those persons who would like to attend the so-called court and witness personally to the members of the court.

It is my firm conviction that your request to have your name removed is going to produce a cumulative impact on Mormon leaders and members alike. Your request is only one among thousands, but as each request is received it must go through the appropriate Mormon court. As the numerous requests to have names removed by Mormon leaders, and courts are convened for the purpose of removing names, the Mormon leaders are going to have a cumulative impact of God's Word reaching their minds (we pray). This impact will be compounded if those requesting that their names be removed will attend the court and personally witness to the leaders of the court.

Imagine the impact on the Mormon Church if over one million persons request that their names be removed in a single year.

The members will receive the impact when the names are read at the Stake Priesthood meetings. Imagine what they are going to think when every meetings has numerous names being read off as having left the church.

If you choose Version I and wish to eliminate (or reduce) harassment from Mormon leaders you should take the opportunity in your letter to outline some of the doctrinal problems of Mormonism. The following are some statements that have been made regarding doctrinal problems:

        1. I do not place my eternal life in the hands of any latter-day prophet nor is it (eternal life) conditional on my membership in any church or priesthood. I place my life at the foot of the cross.
        2. I do not believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. He fails every test of a prophet including leading people after another god, uttering false prophecies, teaching false doctrines, and lying.
        3. I am convinced the LDS Church is NOT "The Restored Gospel". I do not believe that the "Gospel" ever left the earth.
        4. I am convinced that the Book of Mormon is a contrived document and not of divine origin.
        5. I am convinced that the Pearl of Great Price (particularly the Book of Abraham) is a work of pure fraud.
        6. I am convinced that the Doctrine and Covenants has been rewritten, added to, and whole sections deleted in such proportions as to make it invalid as scripture of any kind, even if it were true that God spoke to Joseph Smith (which He didn't).
        7. I am convinced that, on the whole, the LDS Church has made serious and substantial changes to all their scriptures as well as most church history. I believe they have done this in order to dupe its members, to hide doctrinal errors and to protect some leaders from exposure of their moral failures.
        8. I am convinced that these changes are so many and of such magnitude as to invalidate the authority of the church in any spiritual or temporal sense.
        9. I am convinced that the Priesthood of the LDS Church holds absolutely NO authority to act in the name of God. Its origin is a lie and its power is the power of priestcraft and Satan is its author.
        10. I am convinced that the LDS "Law of Eternal Progression" with its unscriptural description of the True nature of God is an abomination in the sight of God.

If you choose to attend the so-called church court and written to the Mormon leaders your letter (Version II) should be short and to the point. You should prepare a written statement containing your witness to them. Prepare enough copies to give one to each member of the court. For a Bishops court you will need at least three copies and most likely four or five copies. For a High Council court you will need at least fifteen copies to hand out.

VERSION I "TOTAL"

This letter will explain your position, and your new found faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,
and is designed to eliminate harassment from Home Teachers, Visiting Teachers, Bishops, State Presidents, etc.

This type of letter will be especially helpful to those who are sensitive, and who have suffered great emotional trauma coming out of Mormonism.

(Date) 20___

Bishop (or President) Brigham Doe
12345 Far West Avenue
Granger, Utah 84011

This is to inform you that I am hereby requesting that my name, and the names of my wife and children be stricken from the records of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This request is made freely and with full understanding of the consequences of the act, as is taught by the Church.

We must insist that the record, and the letter notifying us that our names have been removed from the records of the church, show that the only reason that our names have been removed from the church records is that we request it to be so. We also insist that the word excommunication not be used in the letter notifying us of this action. (Depending on the circumstances, you may wish to elaborate here, pointing out that you will proceed with legal action against the Bishop or Stake President personally, and the church corporately, if anything is done to libel your good name or cause you any loss of reputation).

Please be advised that we taking this action because it has been demonstrated to our satisfaction that Mormonism is in great error, and teaches false doctrines. (You might wish to elaborate on some of the false doctrines that you are familiar with at this point).

My family and I rejoice that we have received the real Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, and that we have the assurance and joy of our salvation according to God's Word, The Holy Bible (1 John 5:11-13).

Please be assured that our decision has been the result of much prayer, and is final. We will consider any attempts of Home Teachers, Visiting Teachers or other representatives of the LDS Church to contact us as an infringement of our free agency.

We will not participate in any Church court or "trial," (Disciplinary Council) for we have done no wrong.

Finally, we testify to you that Jesus Christ is THE mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5), and the Mormons apostles, prophets and priests are false ministers (2 Corinthians 11:13), and that Mormonism is the "other" (i.e. "false") gospel that Paul warned of in Galatians 1:8 & 9.

Jesus Christ declared, "I am the way, the truth and the life, and no man cometh unto the father but by me." (John 14:6). We have chosen this day to follow Him!

Sincerely,

(You may wish to indicate at the bottom of the page that you are sending copies to your attorney. One man was getting nowhere with his request until he advised that he would publish his letter in the local paper).

VERSION II "COURT"

This letter is for those who wish to proceed with the so-called "court" and state your case to the Mormon leaders personally.

(Date) 20____

Bishop (or President) Brigham Doe
12345 Far West Avenue
Granger, Utah 84011

Dear Bishop (or President) Doe:

This is to inform you that I am hereby requesting that my name, and the names of my wife and children be stricken from the records of the LDS Church.

We are also requesting that an appropriate court or courts (Disciplinary Council) be convened at your earliest convenience so that we may attend and state our reasons for the request. We expect that a court can be convened in a timely manner. Any attempt to delay our request will be considered to be an infringement on our free agency.

We must insist that the record, and the subsequent letter notifying us that our names have been removed, show that the only reason that our names have been removed from the church records is that we request it to be so. We also insist that the word excommunication not be used in the letter notifying us of this action. (Depending on the circumstances, you may wish to elaborate here, pointing out that you will proceed with legal action against the Bishop or Stake 'president personally, and the Church corporately, if anything is done to libel your good name or cause you any loss of reputation.)

Please be advised that we will bring our own recording equipment to record the proceedings. (if you have access to recording equipment you should do this. If the Mormon leaders refuse to allow you to do this then you should inform them that they may not record the proceedings themselves).

We eagerly await your response to our requests. We are praying that the appropriate court or courts (Disciplinary Council) will be convened within the week, if possible. 'It will be a pleasure to share with you what Jesus Christ has done in our lives, and how we have chosen to follow 'Him, forsaking all others.

Sincerely,

(A recent Bishops manual emphasized that the church is to move very slowly in removing names. Perhaps sending your letter "registered" or "certified" mail will speed things up).

I would very much appreciate receiving a copy of your request and your statement to the court for my files. I would also like to receive a copy of the letter that the LDS Church sends to you notifying you that your request to have your name removed has been granted.

Your request letter should be sent to the proper person in order to expedite the request. Those persons who hold the Melchizedek priesthood should send the request letter to the Stake President in the Stake where your records are located. All other requests should be sent to your Bishop. Those persons who have moved and don't know who their Stake President or Bishop is can send the request to the President of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City with a note indicating where you believe your records are (name the Ward, and Stake that you lived in when you were active in the Church). If you were a member of a Branch, send the request to the Branch President.

The address of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City is:
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
50 East North Temple
Salt Lake City, UT 84150.

If you have any problems or questions regarding your request letter, you can write me an e-mail at rodney.roy@icloud.com . In fact I would like to hear from you even if you don't have any problems.

Myself along with a growing number of Ex-Mormons for Jesus and Concerned Christians, are praying for you and many others like you that have come out of Mormonism or are coming out. We rejoice and praise God for all who come to the real Jesus and become members of the Kingdom of God and Body of Christ.

Ready to leave the Mormon church?

Resigning from the Mormon church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints) can be a tedious and painful process. If you've decided that you no longer want to be a member of the church, resigning on your own can result in unwanted contact from church leaders and multiple requests before your resignation is finally processed. We provide a free service that lets you resign without the hassle.

Quitmormon

Why does this exist?

We are not attempting to influence anyone to leave the church. However, if you have decided that you want to resign, using Quitmormon eliminates most or all unwanted contact and gets you resigned much quicker than resigning on your own.
