This Church
is the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth....
there is no salvation outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. (Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, Page 670)
These two
statements can be heard from Mormons, especially when witnessing. When I
have called the toll free number to order a free video or a free Bible and
had the LDS missionaries deliver it to my home, instead of them teaching me
the six preset discussions, I witness to them. The last time I did this
they actually said after we finished, "we are not really sure why you
had us here".
We hear over and
over again from the Mormons: "We never put down other churches",
"Why do you attack us?", "We never do this to anyone!",
"That's not Christian." or, "You are persecuting the
Church!". LDS members interpret any disagreement or challenge with
their beliefs as "persecution" or "bashing," and claim
that their Church would never do such things!
REALLY !
Mormonism's
revelation started with Joseph Smith inquiring in the grove which sect or
denomination he should join ? God's answer to him ....
"I
was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and
the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an
abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that:
"they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from
me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of
godliness, but they deny the power thereof." (The Pearl of Great Price
Joseph Smith History 1:19) This
is the SUPPOSED voice of the Lord. All (not some) of the churches are
wrong.
Why?
Because…
"Nothing
less than a complete apostasy from the Christian religion would warrant the
establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."
(Documentary History of the Church, Introduction, X1)
From its inception it in one
broad swoop eliminated anything called Christian.
...Joseph
Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the
`Christian’ churches were in error, teaching for commandments the
doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation 3:282)."...orthodox
Christian views of God are Pagan rather than Christian." (Mormon
Doctrine of Deity by B.H. Roberts, p.116)
Are our views pagan.? Is not the
worship of many gods and the teaching to become one the real paganism, that
is Greek mythology and can be traced to Babylon.
"...the
God whom the 'Christians' worship is a being of their own creation..."
(Apostle Charles W. Penrose, JD 23:243)
Is not ones
offspring their own creation ? This is one who will according to Mormon
theology become a God on another world where his offspring will worship him
as God. "Our spirits and the spirits of all the human family were
begotten by Adam and born of Eve . . . I tell you, when you see your Father
in heaven, you will see Adam; when you see your mother that bore your
spirit, you will see mother Eve.’ (Manuscript Addresses of Brigham Young,
Oct. 8, 1854)
‘When our
father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial
body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and
organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS!
about whom holy men have written and spoken. HE is our FATHER and our GOD,
and the Only God with whom WE have to do.’.. Jesus, our elder brother,
was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of
Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven." (Journal of Discourses,
1:50-51 1854)
Despite those
who deny this today Brigham their president, Prophet /apostle said this,
Some years ago I advanced a doctrine with regard to Adam being our Father
and God. That will be a curse to many of the elders of Israel because of
their folly with regard to it. They yet grovel in darkness and will. It is
one of the most glorious revealments of the economy of heaven. (Manuscript
Addresses of Brigham Young, Oct 8, `1861)
"How much
unbelief exists in the minds of the Latter-day Saints in regard to one
particular doctrine which I revealed to them, and which God revealed to
me--namely that Adam is our father and God...Our Father Adam is the man who
stands at the gate and holds the keys of everlasting life and salvation to
all his children who have or who ever will come upon the earth." (Deseret
News, June 18, 1873)
So here we have Adam a man being
God, Now I ask you which really is pagan? Christianity that believes there
is one God alone who created everything seen and unseen or Mormonism that
teaches a creature is God & everyone can be a God.
"The Lord
created you and me for the purpose of becoming God like himself; We are
created . . . to become Gods like unto our Father in heaven." (Brigham
Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, page 93)
"In large
part the worship of apostate Christendom is performed in ignorance, as much
so as was the worship of the Athenians who bowed before the Unknown God,
and to whom Paul said: "Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him
declare I unto you" (Mormon Doctrine, pg. 374).Was it Adam or another
man that Paul declared to be God? How can one be God unless they were
eternally God, since he is unchanging and infinite in his nature. To die
means one is not God but just a creature , because the wages of sin is
death. The Bible teaches that God is eternal Duet. 33:27 Ps.90:2 "
From everlasting to everlasting you are God."
The founder of this new religion
has said,
"We have
imagined that God was God from all eternity. . . God himself; the Father of
us all dwelt on an earth the same as Jesus Christ himself did, . . .You
have go to learn how to be gods yourselves; . ." (Joseph Smith, Times
and Seasons, Vol. 5, pages 613-614, History of the Church, Vol. 6, pp.
305-06).
God is an
exalted man, perfected, enthroned, and supreme." Mormon
doctrine.p;250) "God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted
man… I say, if you were to see him today, you would see him like a man in
form- like yourselves, in all the person, image and very form as a man…
we have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will
refute that Idea, and will take away the veil, so that you may see. (J.
Smith History of the Church vol.6 p.305)
Here then is
eternal life… to know the only wise and true God. And you have got to
learn how to be gods yourselves and to be kings and priests to God, the
same as all Gods before you ... "(teachings of the prophet J. Smith
p.346,347)
Yet they will actually say,
"... the
time came when Paganism was engrafted into Christianity, and at last
Christianity was converted into Paganism rather than converting the
Pagans" (Journal of Discourses 22:44)."how many Gods there are, I
do not know. But there never was a time when there were no Gods and
worlds…(Brigham Young JD vol.7 p.333)
"To us
speaking in the proper finite sense, these three are the only Gods we
worship. But in addition there is an infinite number of holy personages,
drawn from worlds without number, who have passed on to exaltation and are
thus gods" (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 576-577).
Lets go on examining their
attacks on the Christian church they claim to represent .
"But as
there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries
past, until the present century " (Journal of Discourses 18:172).
"After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized,
there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively
as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations
which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their
creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They belong to
Babylon." (George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth, p.324)
"The
Roman Catholic, Greek, and Protestant church, is the great corrupt,
ecclesiastical power, represented by great Babylon...." (Orson Pratt,
Orson Pratt, Writings of an Apostle, "Divine Authenticity," no.6,
p.84).
"Both
Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the "whore of
Babylon" whom the lord denounces by the mouth.. ." (Pratt, The
Seer, p.255) "Christians - those poor, miserable priests Brother
Brigham was speaking about - some of them are the biggest whoremasters
there are on the earth ..."(Journal of Discourses 5:89).
"Behold
there are save two churches only; the one is the Church of the Lamb of God
and the other is the church of the devil; wherefore whoso belongeth not to
the church of the lamb of God belongeth to that great church; which is the
mother of abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth." (The
Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 14:10)
So they identify themselves as
the only true church which came on the scene lately. Yet Jesus the
architect of the Church said he would build it from the beginning and the
gates of hell would not overcome. who are you going to believe?
"What
does the Christian world know about God? Nothing...Why so far as the things
of God are concerned, they are the veriest fools; they know neither God nor
the things of God." (John Taylor, JI 13:225) Modern day apostle
McConkie, "Believers in the doctrines of modern Christendom will reap
damnation to their souls (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p.177) He
goes on to call everything that is not Mormon, "...the great apostate
church as the anti-christ...This great antichrist...is the church of the
devil." (Apostle Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine p.40) "We
talk about Christianity, but it is a perfect pack of nonsense ... the devil
could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity
of the nineteenth century" (Journal of Discourses 6:167).
But whose religion was invented
in the 19th century? Not Christianity that has been here for almost 2,000
years but Mormonism and a host of others that were born from new revelation
from angels. Despite the bible warns ahead of all this Gal.1:6-8,
Mt.24:5,23
They say,
"Mormonism
is Christianity; Christianity is Mormonism; they are one and the same, and
they are not to be distinguished from each other in the minutest detail ...
Mormons are true Christians; their worship is the pure, unadulterated
Christianity authored by Christ and accepted by Peter, James, and John and
all the ancient saints" (Mormon Doctrine, pg.513).
How can this be so when all the
writings speak against other gods. The Bible says the ultimate evil is to
call oneself God. Israel was strictly monotheistic Duet.6:4 stating there
is only one God. I am and there is no others. Mormonism teaches that there
are trillions of Gods.
The Mormon religion is pagan
disguised as Christianity. The Mormon God was not there from before time
but received his position by becoming a man and keeping the ordinances.
Mormons need to understand there is no stairway to heaven, exaltation is a
myth that will be disintegrated when Christ comes back. Jer.10:11 says the
Gods that have not made the heavens or the earth they will perish. This
means all the gods of Mormonism.
Isa. 45:18-22For thus saith the
LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made
it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be
inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. and there is no God else
beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me. Look unto me,
and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none
else,"
Let me ask you why is it fair for
Joseph Smith and all his leaders to
say that all other churches are "corrupt", "Anti
Christ", Babylon", call us every name in the book. Yet as
Christians we can’t reply by saying Joseph Smith & others were in
error and false teachers ? It’s obvious Mormons do not know the attitude
of their own leaders, or they would not be criticizing Christians for
telling them what we do. If we didn’t love them we would not speak out!
It certainly would be easier to say nothing. But love without truth is
hypocrisy, and truth without love is an empty message.
Today there appears to have been
a change of attitude from the LDS church toward other Churches outside
their restoration movement. Instead of putting the churches down as they
once have they now have a new ploy.
They now hide the fact that they
started from Joseph Smith when he was searching for which church he should
join, he was answered from God;
"I was
answered that I must join none of them (Christian Churches), for they were
all wrong...that all their creeds were an abomination in His sight"
(Joseph Smith History 1:19).
When I had a representative from
the Institute of Religion of the Mormon Church when asked about this quote
he was offended that I brought out such a negative statement especially at
the beginning of my program.
Has anything changed since they
want to be accepted as Christians? Has any of these remarks or revelation
knowledge been retracted? Has there ever been an open apology? The answer
to these questions is a big NO!
No quotes of this nature have
been eliminated, their policy still is the same under the surface. Their
stance on anything called Christian outside their own Church is...
"The
gates of Hell have prevailed and will continue to prevail over the Catholic
Mother of harlots, and over all her Protestant Daughters; .... the apostate
Catholic church, with all her popes and bishops, together with all her
harlot daughters shall be hurled down to Hell.... (Orson Pratt, Pamphlets
by Orson Pratt, Page 112)
This Church is
the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth .... there
is no salvation outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
(Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, Page 670)
George Q.
Cannon claims there are only two churches; the Mormon church and Babylon
(Gospel Truths, pg. 324).
The Christian
world, so called, are heathens as to their knowledge of the salvation of
God' (Journal of Discourses 8:171)
We find that L. A. and Orange
county are the fastest growing areas of Mormon growth. Although I would
think that Hawaii could very well see an explosion of Mormonism very soon.
Since they in the midst of mainstreaming their image , trying to be
accepted as just another Christian denomination (but a more true one?).
They are still not accepting our believes or practices ,yet they want us to
soften and accept theirs. A Mormon will still divorce someone who becomes a
born again believer different than any other cult group.
Maybe you have noticed their
change of advertisements on TV, Instead of putting the book of Mormon next
to the bible as another testament they now just advertise the Bible so they
can come to your house as being representatives of Christianity. Recently
the LDS Church has carried its bait and switch campaign to new heights. The
New television ads offer listeners a free copy of a King James Bible. This
too will be hand-delivered simply by calling a toll-free number.
But their view of the Bible is
certainly nothing more than a facade ,a LDS smoke screen, exposing their
anti Christ stance. Mormon leaders have made it clear OVER and OVER that
the Bible is inferior to the other books included in the LDS "standard
works."
13th LDS
President Ezra Taft Benson wrote, "All scripture is not of equal
value. The book that is the 'keystone of our religion' and that will get a
man 'nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book'
needs to be studied constantly" (A Witness and Warning, pg.vii).
I remember asking numerous times
for Mormons to justify their teachings from the Bible , at the time not
knowing their view of it cannot be trusted.
LDS Apologist Hugh Nibley noted,
"Nephi's view of the New Testament, then, rests on two basic
propositions. Proposition number one is that the Bible has come down to the
world in a mutilated form" Pratt wrote, "What shall we say then,
concerning the Bible's being a sufficient guide? Can we rely upon it in its
present known corrupted state, as being a faithful record of God's word?
We all know that but a few of the
inspired writings have descended to our times, With all their trashing of
sacred scripture I consider the LDS Church as participating in the height
of hypocrisy by deceitfully offering the Bible in its ads. Something they
put down.
However some of their bibles are
a combination of the book of Mormon with it. While this may not be actually
adding to the text it certainly is adding to the word giving one the
impression that they are both compatible,
which they are not ! Giving these books to people they visit is an
easy way to deceive them since most are naive to the contradictions.
If they were compatible then J.
Smith would not have made his own translation. When Christians point out
the curses in the book of Rev. for anyone who changes it, the Mormon
replies but that is for that book only not the others. Yet Prov. 30:6 Do
not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar."
This was written long before the book of Revelation and it means any of his
words.
So we need to ask if these curses
would be in effect if anyone had dared to alter just the Book of Revelation
in any way. Their reply is, this would obviously be so.
In the Joseph Smith Translation:
he had added to, or subtracted from the Book of Revelation over 85 times. I
think that qualifies him for the curses, don’t you ! He made 662 changes
in the book of Genesis 32 different statements about the book of Genesis.
560 changes in the book of Luke. Mt.483, Ps.188, Isa.178, John.159.etc. Do
they present any proof of why the bible is mistranslated . No, all they do
is refer to their infallible prophet/Pope who says so.
When the missionaries come to
your door do they tell people about their real view of the bible that its
full of defects? What they don’t tell people is what Mormon leaders and
the Mormon Scriptures actually say? For good reason, most who read the
bible or have any background in it would throw them right out.
In its general
public statements about the Bible today, The Mormon Church cites its own
Articles of Faith, found in its Scripture, the Pearl of Great Price. We
believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated
correctly;... (Articles of Faith, #8)
As Christians we don't have any objection with this statement,
obviously their are some extremely poor and bad translations (mostly from
the cult). The Jehovah's Witness's New World Translation of the Holy
Scriptures is one example. But this is not what the Mormons really mean
when they state this. Speaking more honestly to their own members recent
Mormon leaders have stated it this way:
The Mormons
most reliable way to measure the accuracy of any biblical passage is not by
comparing different texts, but by comparison with the Book of Mormon and
modern-day revelations. (Church
News, June 20, 1992, page 3, a letter from the First Presidency (Presidents
Benson, Hinckley, and Monson) dated May 22, 1992, to all members of the
Church)
Thus, instead of using the Bible
to evaluate Mormonism they reverse this and use Mormonism to judge the
Bible. When speaking honestly, Mormon leaders view the Book of Mormon as
more reliable than the Bible:
" Unlike
the Bible, which passed through generations of copyists, translators, and
corrupt religionists who tampered with the text, the Book of Mormon came
from writer to reader in just one inspired step of translation. ("The
Keystone of Our Religion", Ensign, by President Ezra Taft Benson,
January 1992, page 5).
The Book of Mormon itself claims important parts of the Bible have
been removed. That it was needed to restore the true gospel.
I [Joseph
Smith] believe the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the
original writers. Ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing
and corrupt priests have committed many errors. (Teachings of the Prophet
Joseph Smith, p.327)
...It was not
until February 16, 1832, however, after a conference in Amherst, Ohio, that
Joseph said it was apparent to him, "from sundry revelations which had
been received, "that "many important points touching the
salvation of man had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was
compiled." (Preface to D&C 76.)
So what do they mean when they
say: God
"...orthodox
Christian views of God are Pagan rather than Christian." (Mormon
Doctrine of Deity by B. H. Roberts, p.116)
"...the
God whom the 'Christians' worship is a being of their own creation..."
(Apostle Charles W. Penrose, JD 23:243)
How anyone can say these things
and publish them with a straight face is beyond me. The pagan concept is
multiple Gods exactly what they believe, Also they have in their writings
that Adam was God and god was once a man who progressed to be god and that
is the God they worship, that is worshipping a god of their own creation ,
god made in the image of man, a creature who is not god at all.
When a Mormon speaks about the
Gospel it is not the Christian Gospel but the restored one of J. Smith, you
can join the Mormon church and not believe Jesus is the Son of God but you
cannot join unless you accept J. Smith as a prophet of God.
This is more than a church but
its a way of life. they will not remove ones name from the roll unless one
is excommunicated , if there are problems they will ask them to go inactive
but will not take the step to leave because its too scary ,The Mormons
believe you are born saved, universalism. Jesus death gave salvation to all
meaning its not salvation from sins but resurrection. Salvation is only
square one, it is exaltation that is important, becoming a God. This
becomes a complicated process.
SALVATION
God so loved, that he made
provision for a 2nd chance and all will receive that opportunity.
Apostle of The
Church Bruce R. McConkie, called the doctrine of salvation by grace without
works, "the second greatest heresy" of Christianity during
Brigham Young University's opening devotional Tuesday. The first great
heresy, he said, pertains to the nature of God, the doctrine of the
trinity. (Staff Report, The Herald, Provo Utah, 1/12/1984)
The nature of god in Christianity
and the persons involved also have to do with salvation.
For Salvation, the Mormon church
has always upheld mans own obedience merits him right standing with God,
whoever that god is, I still haven’t figured out which one.
The
Gospel of Mormonism is "faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the H.
Spirit by the laying on of hands, morality, loyalty, tithing, word of
wisdom, duty, celestial marriage (Articles of faith)
James Talmage, who many
considered Mormonism's greatest theologian, explained Jesus' atoning work
on the cross.
Talmage
wrote, "We believe that through the sufferings, death and atonement of
Jesus Christ all mankind, without one exception, are to be completely and
fully redeemed... [of] Adam's transgression..." (Articles of Faith, p.
477).
Thus, the atonement and death of
Jesus on the cross actually only forgives mankind of Adam's original sin.
How then is man forgiven of his own personal sin?
In the
Improvement Era, an official periodical of the LDS Church, Joseph Fielding
Smith, tenth prophet, explained the solution. "Our Eternal Father
would have every soul saved if that were feasible. Salvation, however, is
based on merit and obedience to divine law and therefore is only obtained
through compliance with divine commandments" (Nov. 1965, p. 962).
"Men have
work to do if they would obtain salvation." (Doctrines of salvation
vol.3 p.91)
"Individual
(salvation) that which man merits through his own acts through life and by
obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel." (Doctrines of
salvation vol.1 p.134)
The forsaking
of sin must be a permanent one. True repentance does NOT permit making the
same mistake again (Spencer W. Kimball, Repentance Brings Forgiveness, Page
7)
"We also
have to forsake the sin and never to repeat it not even in our minds, in
order to remain forgiven we must never commit the sin again (Mormon
Missionary Discussion F, Uniform systems for teaching families p.35-36)
11 Nephi 25:23 says that in
order to be saved you must do all that you can do. Are you doing all
that you can do? Have you repeated your sin? The idea of perfection in this
life has been proposed by numerous people over the centuries, and while our
weakness is not a legitimate excuse for practicing sin in reality no one
has the ability not even monks to rid themselves of sin or not repeat it.
Doctrines like this operate from pride. As soon as one thinks they have
become humble walking in perfect obedience they have pride which is the
basis of operation for almost all sins especially false doctrine.
Joseph Fielding Smith. Under the
sub-heading "Misinterpretation of Texts," Smith discussed
Ephesians 2:8-10 in this way: "There
are various opinions concerning the virtue and requirements of salvation.
Misinterpretation of Paul's words has led to much confusion and rejection
of the full gospel plan."
"Failure
to comprehend the two-fold purpose of the atonement has caused many to
believe that all that is essential for salvation is to confess the name of
Jesus Christ." "Those who teach the doctrine of 'faith alone' are
searching for an 'easy road to heaven.' ... Someone has referred to them as
Bible Christians - their religion is in the Bible and not very much in
themselves," (Religious Truths Defined, 1961 ed., p. 267).
Smith is actually correct. As
Biblical Christians we do put our faith in the teachings of the Bible and
not in our own works. But it was not an easy road, because Christ had to
suffer through his life and ultimately on the cross to obtain it for us.
They practice a crossless Christianity. And we are to walk in his footsteps
by picking up the cross and denying self. Mormonism operates on the very
opposite basis that all is done so one can obtain the right to be a god on
their own planet just as all other gods before them. They are striving for
an illusive butterfly. You can say their prophets, over promises and their
religion falls way short of its delivery.
What can one say to a Mormon who
comes to their door without it taking hours having only one chance to
challenge them.
When I’m in a discussion I have
them commit to saying they are a Christian. Then I pose a question to them
in this manner.
What if I said I was a Mormon and that I can join any church that teaches the bible. I don’t believe J. Smith was a true prophet or that their are modern day prophets and apostles. I don’t believe Jesus is an angel in the Spirit family of Lucifer. Nor that God gives new revelation adding to scripture neither that I can progress to be god of my own world !
They would answer, Then you are not Mormon!
I would then ask why not ?
Their reply would be, Because
you do not believe what Mormons believe, in our priesthood our prophet, you
don’t believe in eternal progression, or new revelation in scripture!
My reply would then be, This is
exactly the reason why you are not a Christian. You don’t believe in one
god the finished revelation written by the true prophets, that Jesus is the
one true God and that man is a sinner, in need of redemption never to
progress to be God !This is why they don't practice historic Christianity.
"We
Never Criticize Christian Churches"
Compiled by Bill
McKeever
A common
response to Christians who question the teachings of Mormonism is to accuse
them of being contentious and unloving. Often Mormons will question the
"Christianity" of the person and proudly claim that members of
the LDS Church never criticize the beliefs of others and therefore conclude
that no one else should either. As the following quotes demonstrate,
Mormons leaders have long criticized Christians, and oftentimes very
harshly.
Joseph
Smith (Mormonism's founder) —
Joseph Smith claimed that he had
seen both God the Father and Jesus Christ and asked these personages which
church he should join. He claimed he was told to join none of them,
"for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that
all their creeds were an abomination in his sight" (Joseph Smith
History 1:19).
When asked "Will all be
damned but Mormons?" Smith replied, "Yes, and a great portion of
them unless they repent and work righteousness" (Teachings of the
Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 119).
"Behold there are save two
churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the other is
the church of the devil; wherefore, whoso belongeth not to the church of
the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of
abominations; and she is the whore of all the earth" (Book of Mormon,
1 Nephi 14:10).
The Doctrine and Covenants (1:30)
leaves no doubt to the Mormon teaching of exclusivity when it says the LDS
church is, "the only true and living church upon the face of the whole
earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased ...."
Brigham Young (Mormonism's Second President) —
"When the light came to me I
saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness"
(Journal of Discourses 5:73).
"The Christian world,
so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God"
(Journal of Discourses 8:171).
"With a regard to true
theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called
Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199).
"Should you ask why we
differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they
are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal
of Discourses 10:230).
"The religion of God
embraces every fact that exists in all the wide arena of nature, while the
religions of men consist of theory devoid of fact, or of any true principle
of guidance; hence the professing Christian world are like a ship upon a
boisterous ocean without rudder, compass, or pilot, and are tossed hither
and thither by every wind of doctrine" (Journal of Discourses 10:265).
"... the time came when
Paganism was engrafted into Christianity, and at last Christianity was
converted into Paganism rather than converting the Pagans" (Journal of
Discourses 22:44).
"Brother Taylor has just
said that the religions of the day were hatched in hell. The eggs were laid
in hell, hatched on its borders, and kicked on to the earth" (Journal
of Discourses 6:176).
John Taylor (Mormonism's 3rd President) —
"We talk about Christianity,
but it is a perfect pack of nonsense ...the devil could not invent a better
engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth
century" (Journal of Discourses 6:167).
"What! Are Christians
ignorant? Yes, as ignorant of the things of God as the brute beast."
(Journal of Discourses 6:25).
"What does the Christian
world know about God? Nothing ...Why so far as the things of God are
concerned, they are the veriest of fools; they know neither God nor the
things of God" (Journal of Discourses 13:225).
"And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses 6:24).
Daniel H. Wells (Mormon Apostle) —
"The whole system of
Christianity is a failure so far as stemming the tide of wickedness and
corruption is concerned, or turning men from their evil ways to living
lives of righteousness before God our Heavenly Father. I would rather
preach the Gospel to a people who have not got any religion than I would to
a people who have got a great deal of religion. You take the Catholic
world. What impression can the truths of the Gospel make upon them as a
people? Scarcely any impression at all. Why? Because they are satisfied
with what they have got, which we know is an error, and which is not
calculated to stem the tide of wickedness and corruption which floods the
world. It never will convert the world to God or His Kingdom, or convey a
knowledge of God unto the children of men, and it is life eternal to know
Him, the living and true God. The Christianity of the period will never
make the people acquainted with God in the world. It will never bring them
to eternal life as spoken of in the Scriptures. It is an utter
impossibility. In the first place they do not know anything about God, and
in the second place, they apparently don't want to know anything about Him.
They have reared a superstructure in the earth which is false. It is and
has been a tremendous imposture to the children of men. Some have come out
of it, to a certain extent, seeing its incongruity, and yet they have
floundered in the dark, not knowing what was right; not having that
knowledge of God which is necessary to obtain eternal life, they have been
tossed to and fro and carried about by every wind of doctrine, without
being able to find the truth. Many who have thus been foundering are honest
people; but the so-called system of Christianity is not only an error and a
snare, but is a monstrous iniquity fastened upon the children of men
throughout the earth. No wonder that people become infidel. The
inconsistent and incongruous nature of the system is enough to make any
being who reasons infidel. It was time the truth should be revealed; it was
time for the Lord to restore the everlasting Gospel, for men were blind.
Darkness covered the earth, even gross darkness the minds of the people in
regard to religious subjects. Perhaps a darker time was never known since
the earth began its revolutions around the sun. From what I have read and
from what experience I have had in life, and the intelligence I possess, I
make bold to give my testimony that the darkest period the world ever saw
was when this work first commenced, when it was made known from heaven to
Joseph Smith. It was no darker here, perhaps, than in any other part of the
world; but it was just as dark in Christian countries as in any Pagan
country, so far as true religion and the light of heaven were
concerned" (Journal of Discourses 24:321-322).
Orson Pratt (Mormon Apostle) —
"Q. After the Church of
Christ fled from the earth to heaven, what was left?
"A. A set of wicked
Apostates, murderers, and idolaters, who ...left to follow the wicked
imaginations of their own corrupt hearts, and to build up churches by human
authority..." (The Seer, pg.205).
"...all other churches are
entirely destitute of all authority from God; and any person who receives
Baptism or the Lord's supper from their hands highly offend God, for he
looks upon them as the most corrupt of all people ...The only persons among
all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who have authority from Jesus
Christ to administer any gospel ordinance are those called and authorized
among the Latter-day Saints" (The Seer, pg. 255).
"This class of men, calling
themselves Christian, uniting with the various forms of the pagan religion,
adopting many of their ceremonies and institutions, became very popular,
and finally some of the pagans embraced Christianity and were placed, as it
were, upon the throne, and what they termed Christianity became very
popular indeed. How long has this order of things existed, this dreadful
apostasy, this class of people that pronounced themselves Zion, or
Christians, without any of the characteristics of Zion? It has existed for
some sixteen or seventeen centuries. It has spread itself and grown and
gone into the four quarters of the earth. It is the great ecclesiastical
power that is spoken of by the revelator John, and called by him the most
corrupt and most wicked of all the powers of the earth, under the name of
spiritual Babylon, or in other words Babel, which signifies confusion. This
great and corrupt power is also represented by John as presenting a golden
cup to the nations, full of all manner of filthiness and abominations"
(Journal of Discourses 14:346).
"This great apostasy
commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it
has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of
Discourses 18:44).
"But as there has been no
Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the
present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has
given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and
they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because
they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the
nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance, and
they are represented in the revelations of St. John as a woman sitting upon
a scarlet colored beast, having a golden cup in her hand, full of
filthiness and abominations, full of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication; that in her forehead there was a name written - `Mystery,
Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots'" (Journal of Discourses
18:172).
"Who is Babylon? I have
already explained that Babylon is a great power that should be in the earth
under the name of a church, a woman - that generally represents a church -
full of blasphemy ...These churches are scattered over the wide face of the
earth, and this is called Babylon. Another angel is to follow the one that
brings the Gospel, after it has been sufficiently preached, and proclaim
the downfall of this great and corrupt power in the earth" (Journal of
Discourses 18:179).
"The worshipers of Baal were
far more consistent than apostate Christendom; for they had a faint hope
that Baal would hear and answer them; but modern divines have no
expectation that their God will say anything to them or to their followers.
Baal's followers cried from morning until evening for him to give unto them
a miraculous manifestation, in the presence of Elijah; but to even expect a
supernatural manifestation or revelation now is considered, by modern
religionists, as the greatest absurdity. Baal's worshipers, therefore, with
all their absurdities, approached nearer the religion of heaven, in some of
their expectations, than those who falsely call themselves Christians"
(Divine Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, No. 1 (1850), pp.12-13).
"We have already proved in
the previous numbers of this series that immediately after the first
century the whole earth became corrupted by the great "Mother of
Harlots," that apostasy and wickedness succeeded Christianity, that
for the want of new revelation, all legal succession to the apostleship was
discontinued that the gifts and powers of the Holy Spirit ceased and that
the Church was no longer to be found on the earth: this being the case, all
nations must have been destitute of the everlasting gospel for many
generations - not destitute of its history as it was once preached and
enjoyed but destitute of its blessings, of its powers, of its gifts, of its
priesthood, of its ordinances administered by legal authority" (Divine
Authenticity of the Book of Mormon, No.6 (1851), pg.82).
Heber C. Kimball (First Counselor
to Brigham Young) —
"Christians - those poor,
miserable priests Brother Brigham was speaking about - some of them are the
biggest whoremasters there are on the earth ..." (Journal of
Discourses 5:89).
George Q. Cannon (Counselor to
presidents Young, Taylor, Woodruff and Snow) —
"I do not wish to say
anything in relation to other forms of religion; I do not know that it is
necessary that I should do so; but no thinking man can admit that
Christianity so-called - I call it a false Christianity, untrue to its name
- satisfies the wants of humanity at the present time. It is not a religion
that satisfies" (Journal of Discourses 24:185).
George Q. Cannon (First
Presidency) —
"I do not wish to say
anything in relation to other forms of religion; I do not know that it is
necessary that I should do so; but no thinking man can admit that
Christianity so-called - I call it a false Christianity, untrue to its name
- satisfies the wants of humanity at the present time. It is not a religion
that satisfies" (Journal of Discourses 24:185).
"After the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches
upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of
God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches
throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations,
have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth,
pg.324).
Wilford Woodruff (4th LDS
President) —
"I said then, and I say now,
may the Lord give me such periods of darkness as were enjoyed by the
Apostles and Saints of old, in preference to the Gospel blaze of modern
Christianity. The ancient doctrine and power will unlock the mysteries of
heaven, and pour forth that Gospel light, knowledge, and truth, of which
the heavens are full, and which has been poured out in every generation
when Prophets appeared among the children of men. But the Gospel of modern
Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want
nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the
dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses 2:196).
Erastus Snow (LDS Apostle) —
"There is a theory in the
human mind - I will say with a certain school of modern philosophers - to
satisfy themselves and justify their infidelity; the bent and tendency of
their inclinations is that way. But it is probable that the crude,
undefined devices and erroneous notions and ideas of modern Christianity
touching the Deity leads to this infidelity, as much as anything else. The
advocates of Christianity are in a great measure to blame. When we begin to
scan the teachings and enquire into the views of the leading divines of
modern times, and examine their articles of faith and their discipline, the
teachings of different Christian denominations on the subject of the Deity,
we do not wonder that the reflecting, careful thinker, should repudiate
their crude notions" (Journal of Discourses 19:268).
B.H. Roberts (LDS Seventy and
Historian) —
"Nothing less than a
complete apostasy from the Christian religion would warrant the
establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"
(Introduction to the History of the Church 1:XL).
"This view of God as an
incorporeal, immaterial, bodiless, partless, passionless being is now and
has been from the days of the great apostasy from God and Christ, in the
second and third centuries, the doctrine of Deity generally accepted by
apostate Christendom. The simple doctrine of the Christian Godhead, set
forth in the New Testament is corrupted by the meaningless jargon of these
creeds, and their explanations; and the learned who profess a belief in
them are wandering in the darkness of the mysticisms of the old pagan
philosophies" (History of the Church, 1:LXXXV).
Parley P. Pratt (Mormon Apostle)
—
"The false and corrupt
institutions, and still more corrupt practices of `Christendom,' have had a
downward tendency in the generations of man for many centuries ...The
overthrow of those ancient degenerate races is a type of that which now
awaits the nations call `Christian,' or in other words, `the great whore
that sitteth upon many waters" (Key to the Science of Theology, 1938
ed., pg.106).
James Talmage ( LDS Apostle) —
"A self-suggesting
interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure
from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy
from the Church of Christ ...From the facts already stated it is evident
that the Church was literally driven from the earth; in the first ten
centuries immediately following the ministry of Christ the authority of the
Holy Priesthood was lost among men, and no human power could restore
it" (The Articles of Faith, pp.200,203).
"The significance and
importance of the great apostasy, as a condition precedent to the
re-establishment of the Church in modern times, is obvious. If the alleged
apostasy of the primitive Church was not a reality, the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints is not the divine institution its name
proclaims" (The Great Apostasy, preface).
Joseph Fielding Smith (10th LDS
President) —
"For hundreds of years the
world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one
fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation that was not, in the
year 1820, so obscured by false tradition and ceremonies, borrowed from
paganism, as to make it unrecognizable; or else it was entirely denied
...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him
that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments
the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation 3:282).
Spencer W. Kimball (12th LDS
President) —
"This is the only true
church ...This is not a church. This is the Church of Jesus Christ. There
are churches of men all over the land and they have great cathedrals,
synagogues, and other houses of worship running into the hundreds of
millions of dollars. They are churches of men. They teach the doctrines of
men, combined with the philosophies and ethics and other ideas and ideals
that men have partly developed and partly found in sacred places and
interpreted for themselves" (Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, pg.421).
"Presumptuous and
blasphemous are they who purport to baptize, bless, marry, or perform other
sacraments in the name of the Lord while in fact lacking the specific
authorization" (The Miracle of Forgiveness, pg.55).
Bruce McConkie (Mormon Apostle)
—
"The traditions of the
elders - as is also the case with the traditions of an apostate Christendom
- are wholly devoid of the least scintilla of inspiration. They are, as
Jesus said, 'the commandments of men'" (The Mortal Messiah, Vol.2,
FOOTNOTES, Pg.412).
"What of seventies? Who are
they, and how do they fit into the eternal scheme of things? That their
mission and ministry is unknown among the cults of Christendom is one of
the great evidences of the apostate darkness that engulfs those who call
themselves by the name of Him who called seventies to stand as especial
witnesses of that very name" (The Mortal Messiah, 3:99-100).
"Thus the signs of the times
include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in
the religious world in general. False churches, false prophets, false
worship - breeding as they do a way of life that runs counter to the divine
will - all these are signs of the times" (The Millennial Messiah,
pg.403).
"What is the church of the
devil in our day, and where is the seat of her power? ...It is all of the
systems, both Christian and non-Christian, that perverted the pure and
perfect gospel ...It is communism; it is Islam; it is Buddhism; it is
modern Christianity in all its parts" (The Millennial Messiah,
pp.54-55).
"As with other doctrines and
ordinances, apostate substitutes of the real thing are found both among
pagans and supposed Christians" (Mormon Doctrine, pg.72).
"When inquiring and
scientific minds delve into the narrow and bigoted creeds of the apostate
sects of Christendom it is not surprising that they rebel against those
dogmas falsely set forth as the tenets of true religion" (Mormon
Doctrine, pg.107).
"Christianity is the
religion of the Christians. Hence, true and acceptable Christianity is
found among the saints who have the fullness of the gospel, and a perverted
Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate
Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, pg.132).
"The only real superiority
of the apostate sects of Christendom over their more openly pagan
counterparts is the fact that the Christian sects (though rejecting the
doctrines, ordinances, and powers of the gospel) have nonetheless preserved
many of the ethical teachings of Christ and the apostles" (Mormon
Doctrine, pg.240).
"And virtually all the
millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical
throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence
who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father
and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, pg.269).
"Gnosticism is one of the
great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and
which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate
religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that
era." (Mormon Doctrine, pg.316).
"In large part the worship
of apostate Christendom is performed in ignorance, as much so as was the
worship of the Athenians who bowed before the Unknown God, and to whom Paul
said: "Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto
you" (Mormon Doctrine, pg. 374).
"For instance: The creeds of
apostate Christendom teach untruths about God, and the scriptures say that
those who accept these creeds 'have inherited lies.' (Jer. 16:16-21.) Those
who accept any of the doctrines of the apostate churches are said to
'believe a lie.' (2 Thess. 2:1-12.) The process of apostasy consists in
changing 'the truth of God into a lie.'" (Mormon Doctrine pg. 440).
"Pagan tribal gods were the
creation of the imaginations of apostate peoples, just as the creeds and
apostate views of God which prevail in modern Christendom are the result of
forsaking the truth" (Mormon Doctrine, pg. 511).
"Mormonism is Christianity;
Christianity is Mormonism; they are one and the same, and they are not to
be distinguished from each other in the minutest detail ...Mormons are true
Christians; their worship is the pure, unadulterated Christianity authored
by Christ and accepted by Peter, James, and John and all the ancient
saints" (Mormon Doctrine, pg.513).
"The gods of Christendom,
for instance, are gods who were created by men in the creeds of an apostate
people. There is little profit or peace in serving them, and certainly
there is no salvation available through them" (A New Witness for the
Articles of Faith, pg.545).
